Prof. Decio. Eizirik will present the keynote Ernst Knobil Lecture at the 38th IUPS

WELBIO is pleased to announce that Prof. Decio Eizirik, WELBIO investigator at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, has been invited to present the keynote Ernst Knobil Lecture at the 38th World Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS-2017), to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 1 to August 5, 2017.

The congress is expected to host around 4,000 physiologists from all continents. The theme of the Congress is "Rhythms of Life". " Prof. Eizirik’s lecture, entitled “When one becomes many: Alternative splicing in pancretic cells", is directly related to his WELBIO project.

In his lecture Professor Eizirik will discuss recent findings from his group indicating: 1. that splicing events occurring in pancreatic beta cells regulate beta cell function and survival; 2. That there are close similarities between splicing regulation in brain and beta cells; 3. That the mining of functional genomics data on alternative splicing in beta cells may lead to the discovery of novel beta cell antigens and biomarkers for beta cell imaging.
