On 27th February 2012, WELBIO launched its 2nd call for projects in fundamental research in life sciences in domains that may lead to medical, pharmaceutical and/or veterinary biotechnology applications.
The call is now closed. For applicants who submitted a letter of intent, the deadline for project submission is 30th May 2012.
Projects should:
- demonstrate excellence into fundamental research in life sciences in domains that may lead to medical, pharmaceutical and/or veterinary biotechnology applications;
- be based on high quality preliminary data;
- have a potential for translation into biotechnology applications; and
- represent the applicant's main research line rather than an addition to a research project which is already financed by another party.
The duration of the project is 2 X 2 years, i.e. a two-year grant agreement renewable for two further years, based on a positive assessment by the Scientific Council. There are two funding categories:
WELBIO starting grant
- Researchers with maximum 12 years of experience post-PhD
- 200.000€/ year maximum
WELBIO advanced grant
- Established researchers
- 400.000€/ year maximum
- The quality of the CV, taking the size of the team into consideration as well as the funding already awarded;
- The quality of the data which the project is based on;
- The originality and feasibility of the project
- The valorisation potential
- WELBIO starting grant: Scientific independence of the applicant whose salary is garanteed independently of the project for the duration of the project.
The selection is made in several steps according to the criteria described in the selection procedure and is in under the responsibility of the Scientific Council. It results in a priority order, which is submitted to the Governing Board for funding decision. This selection procedure is part of the regulations which govern calls for projects and funded research programmes.
Forms and application submission
Grant applications are submitted, with the host institution's authorization, by the Principal Investigator whose salary is guaranteed independently of the project. The submission of a letter of intent is a mandatory prerequisite to the submission of a funding request. Applications are written in English, exclusively using the forms below.
