Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, is one of "Nature's 10. Ten people who Mattered this year." Men and women who, in the opinion of the prestigious journal Nature, made major contributions to science during 2012.

Stem cell reprogramming at the origin of basal cell carcinoma
26/11/2012

In a study published in Nature Cell Biology, researchers lead by Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, dissected for the first time the molecular changes occurring in basal cell carcinoma initiating cells from the first oncogenic mutation until the development of invasive cancer.

BCL6 : A key factor for the differentiation of nerve cells of the cerebral cortex
19/11/2012

In a study published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers lead by Pierre Vanderhaeghen, WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, and ULB Neuroscience Institute (UNI), Belgium, discovered a gene called BCL6 as a key factor in the generation of cortical neurons during embryonic brain development. This work opens new perspectives on the differentiation of cortical neurons from stem cells.

Identification of the stem cells responsible for prostate development
15/10/2012

In a study published in Nature Cell Biology, researchers lead by Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, identify novel classes of prostate stem cells that ensure the development of the different cell lineages of the prostate.

p27: A new mechanism regulating the development of the cerebral cortex
27/09/2012

In a study published in Developmental Cell, the group of Laurent Nguyen, WELBIO investigator at GIGA-Neurosciences, Université de Liège, Belgium, identifies new mechanisms regulating the migration of specific neurons in the developing cerebral cortex. Disruption of neuronal migration is associated with various neurological disorders characterized by mental retardation, epilepsy, learning disabilities, or autism.

Wound healing by skin stem cells
05/09/2012

In a study published in Nature, researchers lead by Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, in collaboration with Pr. Benjamin Simons, University of Cambridge, UK, demonstrate the existence of a new population of stem cells that plays a major role during wound healing.

Identification of cancer stem cells for the first time in vivo
02/08/2012

In a study published in Nature, researchers lead by Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, WELBIO investigator at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, in collaboration with Pr. Benjamin Simons, University of Cambridge, UK, demonstrate for the first time the existence of cancer stem cells during unperturbed solid tumor growth.

How trypanosome inhibits immune response
15/06/2012

In a study published in Science, researchers led by Professor Etienne Pays, WELBIO investigator at the IBMM, Université Libre de Bruxelles, showed how the trypanosome parasite manages to inhibit the immune response of its host. Trypanosome causes sleeping sickness in humans, as well as nagana: a disease that decimates cattle populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
