The 2011 Francqui Price is awarded to Pierre Vanderhaeghen, FNRS research director and vice-director of the Institut de recherche interdisciplinaire en biologie humaine et moléculaire (IRIBHM) at the Université libre de Bruxelles for his seminal contributions to our understanding of brain development and evolution. The laboratory of Dr. Vanderhaeghen demonstrated for the first time how to differentiate mouse stem cells into neurons. This fundamental discovery opens new directions of research, funded by WELBIO, to understand the mechanisms of neurological diseases and to test new drug treatments, and offers the possibility to develop regenerative therapies.
