Dr Laurent Nguyen, WELBIO Investigator at GIGA-Neurosciences (University of Liège) is the 2015 winner of the triennial prize awarded by the Pierre and Simone Clerdent Foundation.
The Nguyen laboratory untangles the molecular mechanisms that drive cerebral cortex development in health and disease. One aspect of their research focuses on gene mutations that are associated with cortical malformations (MCD) in patients, such as microcephaly, lissencephaly and polymicrogyria.
The prize, which support medical research in the field of neurological disorders, will help the Nguyen team to conduct research in collaboration with french geneticists to study the consequences of gene mutations in patients suffering from MCD. By using a multidisciplinary approach in animal models, the Nguyen team will decipher the pathological mechanisms triggered by these mutations in patients.
