Founded in 2009, the WELBIO institute currently includes 28 research programmes in the following therapeutic areas: oncology, immunology & inflammation, cardiometabolic diseases, neurosciences, microbiology & infectious diseases.
WELBIO aims at promoting scientific excellence in fundamental life sciences research and translating scientific achievements in medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary biotechnology applications.
Structure and management
Since 2015, WELBIO is integrated within the "Fonds de la Recherche Fondamentale Stratégique (FRFS)" as the strategic axis in Life Sciences. The FRFS is an associated fund of the FNRS, entrusted by the Walloon Government to manage the administrative and financial aspects of calls for projects for strategic research axes in Wallonia.
WELBIO is a not-for-profit organisation (a.s.b.l.) managed by a Board of Directors. The day-to-day management is delegated to the Managing Director. The governance of WELBIO asbl is based on its bylaws.
