Founded in 2009, the WELBIO institute currently includes 28 research programmes that cover health themes as varied as cancer, immunology, neurobiology, microbiology, metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, asthma and cardiology.
WELBIO aims at promoting scientific excellence in fundamental life sciences research and translating scientific achievements in medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary biotechnology applications.
Structure and management
WELBIO is currently integrated with the "Fonds de la Recherche Fondamentale Stratégique (FRFS)" as the Life Sciences strategic line of action. The FRFS is an associated fund of the FNRS, entrusted by the Walloon Government to organise the administrative and financial management of the calls for Walloon strategic research projects. WELBIO asbl is designated as "Plateforme d'animation et de valorisation" for the FRFS-WELBIO. The organisation of WELBIO and the respective roles of the FNRS and WELBIO asbl are specified in a framework convention between the Walloon Region and the FNRS, in a collaboration agreement between the FNRS and WELBIO asbl as well as in a collaboration agreementwith the universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
WELBIO is a not-for-profit organisation (a.s.b.l.) managed by a Governing board. The day-to-day management is delegated to the General Manager. The governance of WELBIO asbl is stipulated in its statutes.
